What’s new on the web

The new Trace on the web

Every page has been rebuilt for ease of use and a nicer visual experience, on phones and on computers. Your account and Library are the same, but a few things have changed.

  • On a computer, a sidebar holds your Library by status, New chapters, Recent activity, Check-in, your saved views and your collections, with Stats and your account at the bottom. Search is ⌘K.
  • On a phone, the name at the top of the screen is a menu: Library, Collections, Stats and Account. The Library has two pages, Browse and Recent, as the iPhone app does.
  • Recent activity shows your reading day by day: what you read, finished and saved, and when.
  • Collections now have new types: Simple, Ranked, or Grouped. Reorder stories, move them between groups, and share a collection with a link.
  • Story updates: forward AO3’s update emails to Trace and new chapters show in your Library, on every device.
  • Import your AO3 History from its page, with the extension. The date you last read each story comes with it.

Resolved in Trace 0.6.2

Trace Reader 1.0.0 is now available

Trace Reader is now available free on iPhone and iPad: a private, offline EPUB reader built around downloaded AO3 works.

  • Read downloaded AO3 EPUBs offline with paged or scrolling layouts, Paper, Sepia, Night and High Contrast themes, adjustable typography and spacing, and accessible font choices.
  • Organise your EPUB library with Saved, Reading, Caught up, Paused, Finished and Dropped statuses, plus ratings, personal tags, private notes and detailed AO3 filters.
  • Choose folders for automatic import. Reader recognises updated versions of the same AO3 work without creating duplicates, preserves your place and keeps previous EPUBs available to restore.
  • No account is required, and EPUB files and story text stay on your device. Connecting Trace is optional and brings browser and offline reading into one searchable library.

Released in Trace Reader 1.0.0

Trace 0.6.0 + extension 0.5.2

This release reshapes the Library around the reader lifecycle, expands public Collections, and ships the extension 0.5.2 end-of-story and iOS reliability work.

  • Library status language now matches the fanfiction reading lifecycle more closely: Saved, Reading, Caught up, Paused, Finished, and Dropped, with clearer work-state labels for Complete, Ongoing, Hiatus, and Abandoned works.
  • The Library, story cards, filters, and full story detail view received the largest usability pass in this release, with better compact/browse scanning, richer detail pages, steadier mobile chrome, and more resilient search and pagination for larger libraries.
  • Collections sharing is more complete: public links can carry attribution, public collection pages have safer source-link handling and share previews, viewers can save shared stories into their own libraries, and moderation/reporting paths are in place.
  • Check-in is now focused on actionable cleanup instead of broad weekly noise, including work-state backlog items and finish/caught-up follow-ups created by the extension when Trace needs your answer.
  • First-story setup and extension activation have clearer recovery paths, stronger account/session checks, and better telemetry around the first successful save so setup issues are easier to diagnose.
  • Extension 0.5.2 adds final-chapter prompts for Finished or Caught up decisions, updates extension status language to Saved/Caught up/Finished, fixes iOS wrapper tap, export, public-link, and sideways-scroll issues, and improves FanFiction.net author-page metadata refreshes.
  • Note - extension and iOS app features roll out as Chrome, Firefox, and App Store reviews approve version 0.5.2. The web-side Library and Collections changes can appear before every store has finished review.

Trace 0.5.0

This release improves first-story setup, adds AO3 saved filters, and expands the archive-page controls for active reading.

  • First-story setup is clearer on the empty Library and setup guide, with more specific browser/device guidance, better recovery paths, and improved Safari support copy.
  • AO3 saved filters can sync through Trace, so frequently used filter presets are easier to reuse while browsing AO3.
  • The extension overlay now supports more reader actions, including catch-up context and rating updates from supported archive pages.
  • The extension popup and archive-page controls received reliability and polish improvements around staying open after actions.
  • Note - extension and iOS app features roll out as Chrome, Firefox, and App Store reviews approve version 0.5.0. The web-side setup improvements can appear before every store has finished review.

Trace 0.4.0

This release adds Collections, updates the site visuals, and makes the extension popup more useful for saved stories.

  • Collections are an ordered group of stories you curate yourself. They are intended to be a way to more easily organize and share your favorite stories beyond the library archive. Collections can be ordered, filtered, and shared with a public link. You can also add notes that are specific to collections, or choose to bring along your notes from the library.
  • Collections can stay private or be shared with a public link. Shared collection pages show the stories in the collection without exposing private reading notes, tags, ratings, or progress. Public links are persistent, but can be revoked at any time, allowing you to control access.
  • The extension popup now shows your personal tags and notes for saved stories, so you can check your own context without opening the full library first.
  • The site visual update brings a slightly new layout and style across the website. Hopefully an improved one. If you have any feedback or issues please let me know!
  • Note - the extension updates are still pending review on the various extension stores. The update may take a few days to roll out.

Extension 0.3.0 rollout

  • Mobile-friendly story sheet for status and progress management.
  • Refreshed toolbar popup with connection, import, and behavior controls.
  • Privacy boundary unchanged: no AO3/FFN credentials, cookies, story text, or unrelated browsing history.
