TraceBeta

For readers on AO3 and FanFiction.net

“Have I read this one?”

Your reading memory.

I built Trace because reading fanfiction gets messy. I wanted a tool that could replace my 50 open tabs, remember my reading automatically, and organise everything so that I never lose track.

Have I read this one?

Your status and progress show right on AO3 and FanFiction.net. Add a new fic in a click, or just open it and Trace keeps track.

Where did I get up to?

Trace tracks your chapter progress automatically as you read. Open the next chapter and your place moves with you, and your Trace library has it too.

Can I close these tabs now?

On iPhone, Trace finds the AO3 and FanFiction.net stories open in Safari, up to 250 at a time. You choose a status for each, and once they’re in your library you can close the tabs.

Has it updated yet?

Opt in to notifications on your iPhone when stories you subscribe to on AO3 post a chapter. It works with one Gmail filter.

Which one was the time loop?

Give any fic a private rating, a note and your own tags, then find it again in your reading history with search and filters.

Free for your first 100 stories.

Trace Unlimited has no story limit, plus complete Stats.

What Trace is

Trace is a fanfiction tracker for AO3 (Archive of Our Own) and FanFiction.net. It remembers which fics you have read, keeps your chapter progress as you read, and gathers everything into one private, searchable library with your own statuses, ratings, notes, tags and collections. Trace is an unofficial companion and isn’t affiliated with AO3 or FanFiction.net.

Where Trace works

Trace for iPhone saves from Safari as you read and is on the App Store. The Trace browser extension runs in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on desktop and in Firefox for Android (set up Trace). Trace Reader is a separate iPhone and iPad app for reading downloaded AO3 EPUBs offline. Your library is the same everywhere.

What Trace keeps

Trace never asks for your AO3 or FanFiction.net password and never stores story text: you always read on the archive, so authors keep their hits and kudos. The extension only runs on AO3 and FanFiction.net pages. Your library is private by default, with no ads and nothing sold. The extension’s source is published on GitHub.

What it costs

Trace is free for libraries up to 100 stories, with no time limit. Trace Unlimited removes the story limit and adds complete Stats for $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year.
