How to keep track of what you’ve read on AO3

Saving a story is easy. Remembering six months later whether you read it, where you stopped, and whether you loved it or quietly abandoned it is the harder part.

When you are signed in, AO3 offers History, Mark for Later, Bookmarks and Subscriptions. Each does a different job. This guide explains the differences, shows how to organise Bookmarks, and explains when a separate reading log can help.

What each AO3 reading tool does

What you wantUseWhat to know
Find a story you opened recentlyHistoryWhen History is enabled, AO3 records this automatically and puts recent visits first. Useful for retracing, but the full list cannot be searched, filtered or re-sorted.
Keep a simple to-read queueMark for LaterFast and private, but it has no notes, personal tags, search or filtering.
Organise stories inside AO3BookmarksAdd notes and your own tags and filter the list however you want.
Hear when a story updatesSubscriptionsAO3 emails you about new work or chapters. It does not remember your reading status or current chapter.

How to organise AO3 Bookmarks and reading progress

If you want an AO3-only system, private Bookmarks can do much more than hold favourites. The trick is to use a small vocabulary consistently instead of inventing a completely new note every time.

  1. Choose a few status tags

Bookmark tags such as saved, reading, finished and dropped are enough for most people. They are your labels, so the exact words matter less than using the same ones each time.

  2. Put details in the note

Record the chapter where you stopped and one short thought that will help later. Update the note when you make meaningful progress; it does not need to become a reading diary unless you want one.

  3. Make personal notes private

Public bookmark notes and tags can be seen by other people, so make sure you set Private before saying anything you meant only for yourself.

  4. Filter the list you’ve built

AO3 can filter Bookmarks using work tags and your own bookmark tags. That means you can ask for your finished Naruto bookmarks, your saved Time Travel stories, or anything else your tags and the work metadata describe.

Keep the structure small enough that you will still use it after the novelty wears off.

AO3’s Bookmarks FAQ explains the privacy controls and filtering behaviour, while its Tags FAQ explains how bookmarker tags differ from tags on the work itself.

How to track your reading status and chapter progress

As we’ve mentioned, you can keep track of status and progress yourself through notes and tags on your bookmarks. AO3 doesn’t do this automatically, and anything more complicated is something you’ll have to use an external tool for.

A reading log is separate from AO3

A reading log is not another AO3 feature. It is a separate record of the stories you read. You can keep one in a spreadsheet or notes app with the story link, status, current chapter, rating and a short note. That works well if you do not mind switching away from AO3 and keeping it updated by hand. The advantage is that it gives you a lot more flexibility than a bookmark. You can make a spreadsheet or notes app like Notion or Obsidian do a lot more with your notes and tags.

Common AO3 tracking questions

Can you search or filter AO3 History?

No. AO3 says the full History list is ordered by most recent access and cannot currently be searched, filtered, re-sorted or downloaded. Your browser’s find command only searches the page currently open.

Is Mark for Later the same as a private Bookmark?

No. Both are private ways to save a work, but Mark for Later is a simple queue inside History. A private Bookmark can have notes and bookmarker tags and can be filtered with your other Bookmarks.

Are AO3 bookmark notes private?

Only when the Bookmark itself is private. Treat every note on a non-private Bookmark as public writing.

Do AO3 Subscriptions track reading progress?

No. Subscriptions send update emails. They do not record a reading status or remember your current chapter.

Pick the tool that matches the job

History helps you retrace, Mark for Later keeps a simple queue, Subscriptions send updates, and Bookmarks are AO3’s most flexible way to organise stories. You do not need all of them: start with the one that solves your immediate problem.

If AO3’s tools stop answering “Have I read this, where did I stop, and what did I think?”, you are ready for a separate record. Trace keeps that record beside the stories themselves.
